The 6 Elements of a Mix

The 6 Elements of a Mix

Every mix, according to Bobby Owsinski’s ‘The Mixing Engineer’s Handbook’ in order to be great, must include six main elements :

  1. Balance

The volume level relationship between musical elements.

  1. Frequency range

 Having all frequencies properly represented.

  1. Panorama

Placing a musical element in the sound field.

  1. Dimension

Adding ambience to a musical element.

  1. Dynamics

Controlling the volume envelope of a track or an instrument.

  1. Interest

Making the mix special.

For further reading and deeper understanding of the six elements, we strongly recommend Owsinski’s book.
